How to Back up your Data, Music, iTunes, Picture, etc....

May 10, 2010

It's just about time to collect the student MacBooks for the summer for regular maintenance and upgrade.  The MacBooks will be wiped clean during summer maintenance, therefore all data will be removed.  Quanah ISD will not be responsible for backing up your data, music, movies, pictures, etc.  However, we will provide some guidance on how to back up data that you do not want to lose.

How to back up iTunes?  There are a couple of options to choose from, click on each choice to view the instructions.

External Hard Drive or Flash/Jump Drive
        Recordable CD or DVD

After consolidating your library as in step one of the linked instructions you can determine the size of your iTunes library.  This will be helpful in determining the size of external hard drive that will be required to hold your iTunes library.  Go to Finder>Macintosh HD>, in list mode....>click the drop down arrow beside your user name>choose music, then to the far right side you will see the size of the folder.  It should look similar to this:

2.04 GB is the size of the iTunes file, therefore you would need a hard drive larger than 2 GB.  For the CD or DVD option you would need the appropriate number is discs (depending on the disc capacity that you purchase).

How to back up Documents?

Drag and Drop the folders onto an external hard drive or flash drive or create a burn folder on your desktop, drag and drop the folders into the burn folder and then insert a recordable disc and burn the contents to the disc.

How to back up iPhoto?
Go to Finder>Macintosh HD>, in list mode....>click the drop down arrow beside your user name>choose pictures>iPhoto Library
......drag and drop the folder to an external hard drive or flash/jump drive (check the size of the folder as shown under the iTunes instructions to see what size drive you will need).

How to back up iMovie?
Go to Finder>Macintosh HD>, in list mode....>click the drop down arrow beside your user name>choose Movies.....
drag and drop iMovie Events and iMovie Projects folders to an external hard drive or flash/jump drive (check the size of each folder as shown under the iTunes instructions to see what size drive you will need).

If you have any questions or would like to see additional instructions on backing up other applications please contact John White or Teresa Mahorney.
